Real Madrid Atletico Madrid Finale

By Anthony Hay for MailOnline. By the end he could barely walk. He looked as though he played half injured from his thigh strain.

He was some way from his best. And yet, come that final moment, when Real Madrid needed a penalty to be scored to win a record 11th European Cup, it was, of course, inevitably Cristiano Ronaldo who stepped up.

Somehow, he is destined to dominate, even when not at his best. A season which has often been chaotic, haphazard and saw Rafa Benitez dismissed and a rookie coach appointed in Zinedine Zidane, ends in a historic achievement.

As for their cross city rivals, Atletico, it ends desperately again. In they came within minutes; in , against Real Madrid, they came within seconds.

Last night they came within a penalty kick of this trophy. Make sure you keep up-to-date with all the reaction here on MailOnline.

Thanks for joining. UCLfinal pic. What an amazing feeling. Amazing, the boys gave everything. The club, the fans have been amazing on this journey and we deserve it.

They gave a great game and we feel a little bit sorry for them [Atletico]. A final is a final and you have to win.

Everyone was struggling. I spoke to a few of their players and they were struggling. We were trying not to show it too much but we just kept going.

Brilliant penalties from everyone. It was a very even game, both teams left it all out there. Cristiano Ronaldo, this was written for him.

It proves to all the kids watching that hard work… you get presents at the end of it if you work hard.

He got that pressie…he had the opportunity to stand up there and deliver, and he done that. This team is filled with spirit and emotion.

This is why Gareth Bale left England. These are the moments… Champions League, winning the trophy. At times he looked like he was the older player in the playground with the ball.

Him, Neymar, maybe Pogba, are going to be fighting it out for the best player in the world. The next best team is AC Milan with seven.

A dejected set of Atletico Madrid players are collecting their runners-up medals. The majority of them take the medals off shortly after they are placed on their neck.

It had to be Ronaldo! The Portuguese maestro takes the glory by scoring Real Madrid's fifth penalty to win the Champions League for the third time.

The Champions League final will be decided by a dreaded penalty shootout. Both sets of players are struggling after playing minutes but they must now muster the energy to score from 12 yards.

The Belgian playmaker did raise an arm but Pepe's reaction was ridiculous. Clattenburg simply shakes his head in disgust of the Portuguese.

Maybe it is more than just cramp as Koke hobbles off and is replaced by Partey. We have four minutes left plus any injury time added on by referee Clattenburg.

Pepe, who is now feigning injury, receives a yellow card after yet another cynical foul on Gabi. Bale appears to be limping.

Former Chelsea full back Filipe Luis is forced off with injury. Bale is being stretched out by a member of Real Madrid's medical team.

He appears to be in discomfort but will carry on. He doesn't really have a choice as Zidane has used his three substitutions. The scoreline remains level in Milan with both sides failing to score a crucial second goal at the San Siro.

We will have 15 minutes more of action before a penalty shootout if there is no winner after minutes. Odd from Zidane to use all subs by minute 77 when Ronaldo's clearly not all there physically.

Three players warming up for Atletico. Simeone had used all subs by 90 minutes in but now has two changes still possible this time.

Must be intentional. He's made a big difference since coming on. Atletico may have won this game in normal time if Simeone had started the lively Belgian.

Zidane has made all his changes, Benzema is no longer there to hold the ball up, Bale's calves are tightening. It's advantage Atletico now surely.

Real Madrid's deputy right back goes into the book. Danilo - like Ramos - have to be careful now. Let's see how Real respond. That's what you call a clever foul.

He does go into the book however. We're are into added time in Milan and it looks like it will be heading to extra time again - just like in So he's not only scored in a Champions League final but he also gets a celebratory kiss from his model girlfriend Noemie Happart.

Torres tries to flick the ball in at the front post but Navas is just about able to watch the ball go wide. Game on. He then receives a kiss from an Atletico Madrid fan in the stands.

I take it he knows her. Real Madrid go close on two occasions. First, Ronaldo steps over the ball before directing the ball towards goal before Bale's shot is blocked on the line.

Zidane has put his faith in Vazquez to play alongside Bale and Ronaldo for the remaining 14 minutes. James Rodriguez, who looks destined to leave the club in the summer, will not be happy.

He's just made a superb save to deny Benzema. Marcelo is still playing as a left-wing back while Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema and either Kroos or Modric are taking up attacking positions.

Godin stands on Ronaldo's right foot. Bale takes the set piece but the ball deflects away for a corner. Simeone conducting the Atletico fans, wildly urging them to cheer these near misses by waving his arms up in the air.

They respond. I can feel a goal coming Clattenburg has to get his yellow card out for the third time this evening as Torres lashes out at Ramos.

The ball goes narrowly past Navas' back post. Atletico are finally making a game of this. They go close again but they fail to get the magic touch to divert the ball past Navas.

Carvajal leaves the pitch in tears as an injury cut-shorts his Champions League final appearance. Danilo replaces him. Griezmann smashes the penalty against the woodwork from 12 yards.

The Frenchman hit the penalty with venom but the direction was lacking. Talk of the devil. Torres is in the thick of the action as Pepe goes through the back of him to give away a penalty.

Navas is shown a yellow card for trying to waste time. Real Madrid scorer Ramos appeared to be offside as he poked the ball home but the English officials failed to rule the goal out.

It was a tough call to be fair. Both legendary managers will be happy with the result so far. Capello managed Real Madrid in two separate spells, while Ferguson has close ties with Ronaldo.

Advantage Real and they fully deserve their lead. Ramos' 15th-minute opener separates the two sides at the half-time interval.

Atletico have failed to trouble Navas, in the Real Madrid goal, as Griezmann and Torres have been unable to get into the game. Simeone may look to his options on the bench to change the match.

Real test of Simeone at half-time because he needs to change something. Atletico Madrid's narrow midfield is just not penetrating Real Madrid who have nine men behind the ball whenever they lose it.

It remains to Real Madrid. Their midfield players are capable of playing the kind of tiki taka which saw Barcelona dominate European football.

Modric, in particular, is having an impressive game thus far. Simeone needs one of his creative players to unlock Real's defence while the score is still at Settling down to watch the football with the squad.

Pob lwc GarethBale11 pic. We are into the 32nd minute at the San Siro and the two sides are still separated by Ramos' goal.

The attacking trio are always interchanging but Ronaldo is currently on the right, Bale's on the left and Benzema is through the middle.

Modric is playing in a three-man midfield with Casemiro and Kroos. Horrible marking again from Atletico at that free-kick, Bale was allowed all the freedom to move into space for the flick-on.

They just do not look like their usual selves at all. Griezmann, who is their biggest threat, is yet to really threaten Real's defensive back-line.

You can see why Manchester United tried so hard to sign the Spaniard last summer. He's not only one of the best defenders in world football but also more than capable of scoring important goals.

Look at the delight on his face as he jumps for joy in Milan. He appears to be in an offside position but the goal stands.

Bale flicks on a set piece to the centre of the goal and Ramos pokes home from close range to give his side an early advantage. Captain, leader, legend.

Clattenburg will have his work cut out tonight, every foul greeted by players running to complain. Four times for Real alone already.

Then Griezmann is fouled by Carvajal to send the nearby Simeone mad. The first yellow card comes out. Simeone will instruct his team to attack the right back now that he has received a yellow card inside the opening exchanges in Milan.

Kroos links up well with Bale before shooting at goal. His shot is diverted out for a corner but nothing comes of the set piece. Bale plays a low and dangerous ball across goal.

It looks to be heading for the back post until Casemiro sticks out a leg and diverts the ball to the centre of Oblak's goal.

The keeper reacts by sticking out a leg and the ball is cleared to safety. Superb goalkeeping. Bale stretches his legs to glide past Gabi but the Atletico Madrid man just swipes his legs.

Bale will take the free-kick. Luckily for Marcelo, Pepe manages to clear the ball while being put under pressure. Real's back four can be got at Koke puts in a late challenge on Casemiro and Pepe races up to Clattenburg to call for punishment inside the first minute.

Andrea Bocelli, who performed during Leicester's title celebrations at the King Power, has also just serenaded the crowd.

Now we can finally get to the football Minute einen Foulelfmeter an die Latte schoss.
